Economic impact

Over 100,000 people are employed across the gambling industry in the UK alone. As well as the provision of entertainment this activity contributes over £3 billion to the HMRC in tax revenue from activities across many platforms. Presence on High Streets creating footfall is another critical contribution to the economy.

Impact on sports

Many players use betting as an enhancement to their spectator experience. Revenue from the industry on advertising contributes heavily towards the TV production of live sport, particularly in horse racing. Sponsorship and commercial partnerships with clubs in many sports are a critical source of income to them.

Impact on good causes

The National Lottery is a known enabler of good causes with over £1.5bn contributed per annum. Income from betting operators is largely responsible for the existence of most gambling help and support organisations who all rely on the industry for their revenue. As well as these contributions there are many individual charities who are beneficiaries of industry goodwill.
